Their casual tones as narrators, though, hide Binnie’s clever techniques, making Nevada a subtle masterpiece. It considers the pressures to fit into a certain mold, the performance of gender, and intersectionality, primarily through the lenses of the main trans protagonist and a later gender-questioning character. This work of realistic fiction talks about so much of what I have already written on this blog, even though this is only my second post. At the same time, though, Nevada by Imogen Binnie and the story of Maria Griffiths–a depressed punk transgender woman–is a perfect starting point for Trans Narrative. When I decided to write a review for this blog, I probably could have chosen something more recent than a book in which a Fugazi CD leads to emotional revelations, people still use LiveJournal, and the main character says “The Facebook”.
